How to use Notion AI in Slack: the three official ways

Last updated 8 October 2026

There are three official ways to use Notion AI in Slack. The Notion app for Slack turns messages into Notion pages and tasks and shows link previews. The Notion AI Slack connector lets you search and summarize Slack from inside Notion; it is not a bot you talk to in Slack. Notion Agent and Custom Agents can post and reply in Slack. The connector and the agents need Notion's Business or Enterprise plan.

The names are close, so people mix them up. The Notion app for Slack is a plain integration, not AI. The AI part starts with the connector, and the agents build on it. Pick by the job: saving a message to Notion, finding an old Slack answer while you work in Notion, or letting Notion write in Slack for you.

Which Notion and Slack path do you need?

How do I connect the Notion app for Slack?

Notion's help center describes each feature with its own entry point. One rule covers all of them: when one person connects Notion to Slack, other people still have to connect Slack themselves to use the features.

Get Notion notifications in Slack:

  1. In Notion, go to Settings → Notifications → Slack notifications.
  2. Select Add new account and complete the authentication.

Turn a Slack message into a Notion page:

  1. Enter /notion create in Slack, or click ⋮ next to any Slack message and pick Send to Notion.
  2. Pick the database, the title and any optional properties.
  3. Tick Confirm page creation publicly if you want the channel to see it.
  4. Select Save.

Turn a Slack message into a Notion task: enter /notion task, or click ⋮ next to a message and pick Create task in Notion.

Both slash commands work only at the channel level. Notion's help center says /notion create does not work inside Slack threads, and /notion task has the same limit.

Previews both ways. Paste a Slack link into Notion and choose "Paste as preview" to show the message, the channel and the reply count. Paste a Notion link into Slack and it unfurls; you can grant access to the page from inside Slack.

Invite people from Slack. On a Notion page, select Share → Add contacts from Slack.

Automations. Notion buttons and database automations can send a message to a Slack channel. This is on paid plans only, and you cannot pick private DMs as the target.

Admin control. A Slack admin can turn on approval for Slack integrations, and those settings apply to Notion too. On Notion's Enterprise plan, Notion admins can also stop members from installing the Slack integration.

How do I set up the Notion AI Slack connector?

The connector brings Slack into Notion AI. Notion's help center puts it this way: you can "search Slack messages, summarize channels, and get answers from past discussions without leaving your workspace."

Before you start, check three things:

  • The Notion workspace is on the Business or Enterprise plan and has more than one member.
  • The person setting it up is both a Slack workspace owner and a Notion workspace owner. A Notion owner without Slack permission to connect apps needs approval from someone who has it.
  • You start in Notion. In Notion's words: "Setup won't work if you initiate it in Slack."

Steps:

  1. In Notion, go to Settings → Notion AI.
  2. Select + next to Slack.
  3. Notion sends you to Slack to start the connection. Keep Notion open during setup.
  4. The Slack workspace owner picks the workspace and the channels: All public channels or specific public channels, with the option to include public channels created later. Someone who is not the owner can request the connection instead.
  5. After that, each member can connect their own private channels and DMs. Each person only sees what they can already see in Slack.

The first sync reaches back one year from setup and can take up to 36 hours. After that, new messages can take up to 3 hours to show up in Notion AI, longer for large volumes.

Where you use it: the Notion AI chat in the bottom right of Notion, the Notion AI widget at the top of Home, and Search in the sidebar. Use the All sources toggle to look only in Slack. Notion's own example prompts include "Summarize company activity from this week." and "What happened while I was out of office?"

Notion's connector overview gives one tip: ask specific questions about specific information, such as asking for the action items from a thread and pasting the link to that Slack conversation.

What can't the Notion AI Slack connector do?

The limits are all in Notion's help center:

  • It does not index Slack canvases or lists.
  • It does not index Slack Connect channels or other external messages. Notion AI may still use Slack Connect content when you ask a question, through Slack's real-time search with your own Slack sign-in, and there is no way to leave those channels out of the real-time results.
  • Slack and Notion guest users cannot use it.
  • It reaches back one year from setup.
  • It lives in Notion. Nobody in Slack can mention it or ask it a question there.

On data, Notion says Slack content is stored as embeddings in vector databases such as Turbopuffer, and that edits and deletes in Slack are picked up in near real time. If you disconnect, the Slack content becomes unsearchable at once and the Slack data used for Notion AI is deleted in less than a day. Notion's pricing page says Notion AI does not use your data to train its models unless you opt in.

To disconnect: Settings → Notion AI, select ⚙️ next to Slack, then Settings → Disconnect.

Can Notion AI post messages in Slack?

Yes, in two ways.

Notion Agent acting as you

Once the Slack connector is set up and you have connected your Slack account, Notion Agent (the AI chat in Notion) can do things in Slack for you. Notion's help center lists:

  • look up a person, also by email
  • search channels you are in, including private channels and DMs
  • read what a person or channel discussed recently
  • open files shared in Slack
  • post a message or start a new thread in a channel you are in
  • reply in a thread
  • edit messages it posted for you, and add or remove emoji reactions

The important part is who the message comes from. Notion's help center says: "Your Notion Agent acts as you. Anything it posts in Slack shows up as coming from you, not from a bot." Posts cannot be undone, so read what you ask it to send. It cannot start a new thread inside a direct message. A workspace admin may need to approve the new Slack permissions before your team can use these actions.

Custom Agents that respond in Slack

Custom Agents are agents you set up in Notion to run on their own. They need the Business or Enterprise plan. Notion's pricing page lists them as "Free to try, then $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits."

Before you add a Slack trigger:

  • A Slack workspace admin must first connect Slack to the Notion workspace. That gives access to all public channels. For a private channel, you also authorize your own Slack account.
  • Your Slack account must use the same email as your Notion account.
  • To trigger the agent with an @-mention, the Slack admin must allow all members to create user groups.

Steps:

  1. Connect Slack while you set up the agent.
  2. In Triggers, add a Slack trigger.
  3. Choose the event: a message posted to a channel, an emoji reaction added to a message, or the Custom Agent mentioned in a message. You can include thread replies and add keyword filters.
  4. Choose the channel, then Save.

Since Notion's release of May 1, 2026, Custom Agents can read and reply in private Slack channels. Turn it on under Settings → Notion AI → AI connectors → Enable access to private content. The agent only sees the private channels you invite it to.

A Custom Agent can read the channels you pick, post only to the channels you select, react to threads and use Slack as context. When it is triggered it can show "Working on it...", which Notion notes does not always mean it will reply. People without access to the agent may still trigger it through a channel it watches. Notion also has a Slack Q&A assistant template that answers repeat questions in Slack with links to Notion pages.

Which way should you pick?

If your team's knowledge lives in Notion, Notion's own paths are the natural fit. The connector is the best of the three for finding an old Slack decision while you write in Notion, and a Custom Agent fits when you want answers from your Notion docs to show up in Slack. The Notion app for Slack is enough if you only want to save messages as pages or tasks.

Notion's agents work in Notion and Slack. If the Slack request also touches other tools, such as a CRM, a calendar or a ticket system, that is the case for an AI teammate that lives in Slack and works across many tools, like Glad.

How Glad does this

Glad is an AI teammate that lives in Slack. Anyone in a channel mentions @Glad and asks in plain words, for example: "@Glad turn this thread into a page in our Notion product wiki." Glad works with Notion through an account you connect, one of 1,500+ tools, and reports back in the thread. Each person connects their own accounts, and sharing a connection with the team needs an admin's approval. Before an action that cannot be undone, Glad asks for a yes in the thread, unless an admin always-allowed that tool. Glad is priced per Slack workspace, with no seats and no credits, from $49 a month for 250 tasks and a hard cap. See pricing.

FAQ

Is Notion AI a bot in Slack?

Not by default. The Notion AI Slack connector works inside Notion: it searches and summarizes Slack for you there. Notion Agent can post in Slack as you, and a Custom Agent can respond to Slack messages, mentions and reactions.

Which Notion plan do I need for Notion AI in Slack?

The Slack connector and Custom Agents need the Business or Enterprise plan. Notion's pricing page shows Business at $20 per member a month with yearly billing. Free and Plus list only a trial of Notion AI.

Why does my Notion AI Slack connector setup fail?

Check that you started in Notion (Settings → Notion AI), not in Slack, and that the person is a Slack and Notion workspace owner. The Notion workspace also needs more than one member.

Can Notion AI see private Slack channels and DMs?

Each member can connect their own private channels and DMs, and sees only what they can already see in Slack. Custom Agents can read and reply in private channels they are invited to, once private content access is turned on.

Does /notion create work in Slack threads?

No. Notion's help center says /notion create works only at the channel level, and /notion task has the same limit. Use ⋮ next to the message and Send to Notion or Create task in Notion instead.

Do I need a paid Slack plan?

The Notion help pages we read do not name a Slack plan requirement for the connector. Check with your Slack admin, who may need to approve the integration.
